How the Soviet Union's (and the world's) largest plane died in flames - Russia Beyond

Tupolev ANT-20 “Maxim Gorky”

importance : **

first flight : 19 May 1934 operational : July 1934

country : Russia

design : Andrei Tupolev

production : 2 aircraft

general information :

Built entirely for propaganda. Largest aircraft in the world in the 1930s. It was the

flagship of the Maxim Gorky propaganda squadron. It had a powerful radio broadcast

equipment, known as the “Voice from the sky”. Also it had a library, printing press,

photo lab and a film projector.

On 18 May 1935 the ANT-20 piloted by I.V.Mikyehev and I.S.Zhurov

made a demonstration flight over Moscow, together with three more aircraft. One of

the accompanying aircraft, an I-5 biplane piloted by Nikolai Blagin made loopings

around the ANT-20. On the third loop they collided. The ANT-20 crashed in a

residential area west of the today Sokol metro station. 45 people died in the crash,

including the I-5 pilot, the 2 pilots and 33 passengers aboard the ANT-20 and 9 people

on the ground.

A replacement aircraft was built, indicated as ANT-20bis. It made it’s first flight in

1938. It had now only 6 more powerful Mikulin AM-34FRNV (M.100 ?) engines of 1100

hp and flew with the Aeroflot.

The ANT-20bis crashed 14 December 1942, killing all 36 on board.
